சில்லறை விசயம் (ஓர் உண்மைக் கதை) (2010-11-16)
     

சிலர் பணம் சேமிப்பதற்கு சீட்டு போடுவார்கள். எனக்கு அது பிடிக்காது. சிலர் சேமிப்பு வங்கிக் கணக்கு திறந்து அதில் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக சேமிப்பார்கள். அது எனக்கு பிடிக்காது. வருமானத்தில் செலவழிந்தது போக மீதிப் பணம் சேமிப்பு. இது நாலாம் வகுப்பு படிக்கும் மாணவிக்கும் தெரியும். அறிவு தெரிந்த நாளிலிருந்து எனக்கு அதுதான் கொள்கை. அப்படித்தான் நான் சேமிப்பேன்.

ஆனால் என் மனைவி அப்படி இல்லை. சீட்டுக்கட்ட முடியாது. சேமிப்பு கணக்கு இல்லை என்றதும் சோர்ந்து விடாமல் ஓர் உண்டியல் வாங்கி அதில் சில்லறைகளை போட்டு சேமித்தார். ஒரு நல்ல நாளில் அதை உடைத்து தர்மத்துக்கு கொடுத்துவிடுவார். அன்றைய அருமையான காலை வேளையில் என்னுடைய பிரச்சினை அப்படித்தான் தொடங்கியது. இரண்டு வருடமாக அவர் சேமித்த உண்டியல் நிரம்பிவிட்டது. அதை உடைத்து சில்லறைகளை ஒரு சாக்குப் பையில் போட்டு என்னிடம் தந்து அதை வங்கியில் போய் பண ஓலையாக மாற்றிவரச் சொன்னார். வருட முடிவில் வருமான வரி கட்டப்போவதுபோல என் மனம் ஆனந்தத்தில் துள்ளியது.  இதைத்தானே நான் நெடுகலும் சொன்னேன். இந்தப் பணத்தை உண்டியலில் சேர்த்திராவிட்டால் இது வங்கியில்தானே இருந்திருக்கும். தூக்கிக்கொண்டு போகிற அவஸ்தை மிஞ்சியிருக்கும். நான் சொல்வதை கனடாவின் பிரதமர் ஸ்டீபன் ஹார்ப்பரில் இருந்து என் மனைவிவரை ஒருவருமே கேட்பதில்லை.

வங்கி வாசலில் நான் இரண்டு கைகளாலும் பாரத்தை காவிக்கொண்டு காத்து நின்றேன். ஒரு ருத்திர வீணையை காவுவதுபோல, இரண்டு ஆரோக்கியமான சத்துணவு குழந்தைகளை காவுவதுபோல, மூன்று கதிரைவேற்பிள்ளை  அகராதிகளை காவுவதுபோல கைகள் கனத்தன. நான் கதவை திறக்க முடியாது. யாராவது திறந்துவிடவேண்டும். உள்ளே இருந்து ஒரு வாடிக்கையாளர் வெளியே வந்ததும் நான் அவரை இடித்துக்கொண்டு கதவு மூடமுன்னர் வங்கியினுள் நுழைந்துவிட்டேன்.

வங்கியில் மூன்று யன்னல்கள் இருந்தன. ஒரு யன்னல் பெண் தன் யன்னலை மூடிவிட்டு சற்று தள்ளியிருந்த இருக்கையில் உட்கார்ந்து ஓர் அப்பிள் பழத்தை கையிலே வைத்து எங்கே கடிப்பது என்று யோசித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அது விலை ஒட்டிய அப்பிள். விலை பேப்பரை உரித்து, கைகளால் நன்றாக துடைத்துவிட்டு ஒரு கடி கடித்தார். வங்கிப் பெண் என்றபடியால் ஒவ்வொரு கடிக்கும் எவ்வளவு காசு மதிப்பான அப்பிள் உள்ளே போகிறது என்பதை அவரால் கணக்கு வைக்கமுடியும்.

இன்னொரு யன்னலில் ஒரு தொக்கையான மனிதர் ஒரு தொக்கையான மனுசியின் பணத்தை எண்ணிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அந்தப் பணத்தை வங்கியில் போடுவதற்காக எண்ணுகிறாரா அல்லது மனுசியிடம் கொடுப்பதற்காக எண்ணுகிறாரா என்பது தெரியவில்லை. மூன்றாவது யன்னலில் ஓர் இளம்பெண் உயரமான சுழல் நாற்காலியில் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார். அவருடைய முழங்கைகள் ஈட்டிபோல கூர்மையாக இருந்தன. பயிற்சியில் இருப்பதாக மார்பிலே எழுதி ஒட்டியிருந்தது. எந்த மார்பு என்று சொல்லவில்லை. நான் அவர் முன் கலைந்த தலையுடனும், வியர்வை ஒழுகும் முகத்துடனும் போய் நின்றபோது அவர் என்னைப் பார்த்து அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தது எனக்கு தெரிந்தது. தொப்பென்று சாக்கு நாணயக் குவியலை அவர் முன் வைத்தேன். மான் சட்டென்று முகத்தை திருப்புவதுபோல திருப்பி 'இது என்ன?' என்றார்.
 'கனடிய நாணயங்கள்.'
 'இதை ஏன் இங்கே கொண்டுவந்தீர்கள்?'
 'நீங்கள் சோர்வாக காணப்பட்டீர்கள். உங்களுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியூட்டத்தான்.'
 'இதை நான் என்ன செய்வது?'
 'கூட்டு வைப்பதா, கறி ஆக்குவதா?' என்று கேட்பதுபோல என்னிடம் கேட்டார். ஒரு வங்கியில் ஆகக் குறைவான மூளையை பாவித்து செய்யக்கூடிய காரியம் சில்லறைகளை எண்ணுவது. இதுகூட அந்தப் பயிற்சியிலிருக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கு தெரியவில்லை.
 'எனக்கொரு வங்கிக் கணக்கு இந்த வங்கியில் உள்ளது. நீங்கள் பிறப்பதற்கு முன்னரே நான் அந்தக் கணக்கை ஆரம்பித்திருந்தேன். இந்தச் சில்லறைக் காசை என் கணக்கில் வரவு வைக்க வந்திருக்கிறேன்.'
 'இவ்வளவு காசையுமா?'
 'இல்லை, மீதியை நாளை கொண்டு வருவேன்.'

நான் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போதே பெண்ணின் நாடி கீழே இறங்கி அவர் நெஞ்சிலே அணிந்திருந்த பவள மாலையை தொட்டது. கிலி பிடித்தவர்போல தன் உயரமான இருக்கையிலிருந்து சறுக்கி இறங்கினார். அந்த வேகத்தை குறைக்காமல் ஓடி தன் மேற்பார்வையாளரை கூட்டி வந்தார். மேற்பார்வையாளருடைய முகத்தை பார்த்ததும் காரியம் சரியாகப் போகாது என்பது எனக்கு தெரிந்துவிட்டது. அவர் கால்களை தேய்த்து பின்னுக்கு வளைந்தபடி நடந்துவந்தார். வணக்கம் சொன்னால் நான் வணக்கம் சொல்வதற்கு தயாராக இருந்தேன். ஆனால் அவர் சொல்லவில்லை. எனக்கும் ஒரு சொல் மிச்சப்பட்டது. என்னுடைய முகத்திலிருந்து சரியாகப் பத்து அங்குலம் தூரத்தில் அவர் முகம் இருந்தாலும் அவர் யன்னலைப் பார்த்துத்தான் பேசினார்.
 'எங்களுக்கு சில விதிகள் இருக்கின்றன. உங்களுக்கு தெரியும்தானே.'
 'தெரியாது. நான் வங்கிக்கு வெளியே வேலை செய்கிறேன்.'
 'நீங்கள் எனக்கு ஒரு உதவி செய்யவேண்டும்.'
 'சொல்லுங்கள். உங்களுக்காக நான் என்னவும் செய்வேன். இடதுகைப் பழக்கக்காரனாக மாறு என்றால்கூட  மாறுவேன்.'
 'அதெல்லாம் வேண்டாம். சில்லறைக் காசை உறைகளில் நிரப்பி வாருங்கள். வங்கி ஊழியர்களின் நேரம் முக்கியமானது.'  
 'நன்றி. வாடிக்கையாளர்களின் நேரம் முக்கியமானதல்ல என்ற அறிவு இன்று கிடைத்தது.'
மேற்பார்வையாளர் அசையாமல் நின்றார். நானும் அதே இடத்தில் என் உடல் எடையை கூட்டிக்கொண்டு நின்றேன். ஒரு வார்த்தையும் நகரவில்லை.

இது மோசம் என்று நான் நினைத்தால் இதனிலும் மோசமான ஒன்று எனக்கு காத்திருந்தது. வங்கி மனேஜரிடம் போனேன். அவருக்கு ஒரு நீர்ப்பிராணியின் கண்கள். அவர் உள்ளுக்குள் என்ன நினைக்கிறார் என்பதை ஒருவராலும் கண்டுபிடிக்கமுடியாது. அவர் வங்கி விதிமுறைகள் பற்றி எனக்கு எடுத்துரைத்தார். ஒரு முழு நிமிட நேரத்தைக்கூட அவரால் எனக்கு கொடுக்க முடியவில்லை. என்னுடன் பேசிக்கொண்டே இரண்டு திரைகள் உள்ள கம்புயூட்டரில் ஏதோவெல்லாம் செய்தார். நான் பாரதூரமான குற்றத்தை செய்துவிட்டது போலவும், என்னுடைய காசு நேர்மையான வழியில் சம்பாதிக்கப்படவில்லை என்பது போலவும் என்னை உணரவைத்தார். அருமையான 15 நிமிடங்களை வீணாக்கிய பின்னர் அவருக்கு கீழே வேலை பார்த்தவர்கள் சொன்னதையே அவரும் சொன்னார். அடுத்த பிறவியில் அவருடைய முதுகாகப் பிறக்கவேண்டும் என வேண்டிக்கொண்டேன். எந்தப் பிறவியிலும் அவருடைய கண்களால் பார்க்கப்படுவதை நான் விரும்பவில்லை.

வங்கிக்கு மறுபடியும் நான் போனபோது அங்கே இரண்டு ஊழியர்கள் காத்திருந்தார்கள். ஒரு பெரிய மேசையில் சில்லறைகளைக் கொட்டி எண்ணினார்கள். எண்ண எண்ண அவை வளர்ந்துகொண்டே இருந்தன. ஒரு சதம், ஐந்து சதம், பத்து சதம், 25 சதம், ஒரு டொலர், இரண்டு டொலர் என்று கைகள் தேய எண்ணிக் களைத்துவிட்டார்கள். ஒரு மணி நேரம் கழித்து, நான் கேட்டுக்கொண்டபடி இலங்கையில் உள்ள அனாதை இல்லத்தின் பெயரில் ஒரு பண ஓலை தந்தார்கள். அன்றைய நாள் துடங்கிய பிறகு முதன்முறையாக என்னை பேருவகை சூழ்ந்தது. வேறு யாரோவுடைய பணம் எனக்கு கிடைத்தது போன்ற மகிழ்ச்சி.  நான் பண ஓலையை பெற்றுக்கொண்டு திரும்பியபோது பின்னாலே பெரிய பெருமூச்சு ஒன்று கேட்டது. அது வங்கியின் பெருமூச்சுதான்.

இது நடந்து சில மாதங்கள் ஆனபோதும் என்னால் இந்த சம்பவத்தை மறக்க முடியவில்லை. சுவரில் இருந்த படத்தை அகற்றிய பின்னரும் மங்கலான சதுரம் தெரிவதுபோல அந்த ஞாபகம் தங்கிவிட்டது. அதிகாரத்தில் உள்ளவர்களின் முதல் வேலை விதிகளை உண்டாக்குவது. இதுபற்றி வாடிக்கையாளர்களுக்கு ஒன்றுமே தெரியாது. அவர்களைக் கலந்து ஆலோசிப்பதும் இல்லை. வாடிக்கையாளர்களின் வேலை அந்த விதிகளை சோதிப்பது. வளைப்பது. எவ்வளவு நீட்டமுடியுமோ நீட்டுவது. உடைப்பது. விதிகளை உடைப்பது போன்ற மகிழ்ச்சி வேறு எங்கு கிடைக்கும்.

மனைவி பண ஓலையை அனாதை இல்லத்துக்கு அனுப்பிவைத்தார். அவருக்கு வங்கியில் நடந்தது ஒன்றும் தெரியாது. இனிமேல் நான் வங்கிப்பக்கம் போகமாட்டேன் என்பது தெரியாது. போனாலும் சில்லறை பணத்தை வங்கியில் மாற்றமாட்டேன் என்பதும் தெரியாது. செங்கல் நிறத்தில் பளபளப்பான புதிய உண்டியல் ஒன்று என் வீட்டில் தன் புதிய வேலையை ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டது எனக்கு சிலநாள் கழித்துத்தான் தெரியவரும்.
